Terry Horne has been named publisher and editor of the East Valley Tribune. He is a 35-year veteran media executive with a successful track record in both print and digital businesses.

Horne was president and publisher of the Orange County Register in Santa Ana, Calif., for the past four years. He was also Pacific Region vice president for Freedom Communications, overseeing several community newspapers in California as well as the Yuma Sun in Arizona. Prior to that he served briefly as publisher of the East Valley Tribune in 2007 and formerly was vice president of community newspapers for The Arizona Republic.

“Good newspapers help build communities, inform people and help businesses connect to their current and new customers,” said Horne. “The digital world has been an opportunity to expand that reach through the web, mobile apps and now tablets. The Tribune will aggressively pursue both our print and digital opportunities in serving our communities.”

He said the Orange County Register was one of the first newspapers in the country to develop smart-phone apps and an iPad app to deliver news and information. Digital page views grew more than 400 percent during his four years at the Register.

“You can expect the East Valley Tribune to be a digital leader in offering solutions for both consumers and business. We will be known as a tech-savvy company that will continue to expand its touch to more people through all media platforms. We won’t be afraid to forge media partnerships where it makes sense to better serve communities.”

He said The Register housed KDOC, an LA television station, in its building and negotiated agreements with the LA Times for distribution and shared mail programs that saved millions of dollars for both companies.

“Rapid change and increased competition faces virtually every business and we all face challenges from a weak national economy,” said Horne.

“The Tribune will be an organization that is pliable and open to change so that we can be positioned to deliver news and information however and wherever the customer wants it.

“We will take news and information and our advertisers’ messages to where the customer is – in our Pulitzer-prize winning newspaper or on any digital platform.”

In addition to his role at the Tribune, Horne also was named general manager of 1013 Communications Arizona, which includes the East Valley Tribune, Daily News-Sun in Sun City, the Ahwatukee Foothills News, Arizona Interactive Media, The Explorer in Tucson, Glendale-Peoria Today and Surprise Today.

Randy Miller, president of 1013 Communications, said “having Terry join us is a great addition for our newspapers and for the Tribune.

“He has tremendous experience in our industry and in this area. It’s really a homecoming for Terry since he and his wife are so rooted in the community.”

“1013 Communications is made up of a successful group of print and interactive media businesses serving a significant slice of Arizona,” said Horne. “It has publishers and leaders that live in these communities and care deeply about the state and its people. I am very happy to get to return to Arizona and be a part of a great organization.”

Former publisher Rick Flowers is now advertising director for the Tribune and will also head the digital sales effort for 1013 Communications.

Horne was vice president and chief operations officer for Swift Communications in Reno, Nev., from 2000 until joining the Republic in October 2004. He has held publisher roles at newspapers in Maryland, West Virginia and Kansas.

A native of Oklahoma, he has a bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University and a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University.

His wife, Tammy, owns Tammy White State Farm Insurance in Chandler and they have six children.

Mr. Horne, we plead with you to make the Tribune "different" from the AZ Periodico de Republica. The AZ Repugnant has moved so far to the left to their (20% base?) of progressive socialists. Their propoganda message died in the 1960's. Financially the AZ Rep is hurting as more readers stop taking the paper. They have even called to give me the paper for free!

The East Valley is probably a lot like Orange County with a lot of conservative people interested in businesses, family, flag, and faith. Why not offer an alternative that the majority of the AZ citizens who want to read a newspaper that isn;t preaching leftist propoganda.. Or at least (excuse the FOX term) "fair" and "balanced" with competing articles.

The WSJ does a great job with more liberal colums and a more conservative editorial page. The WSJ's readership has skyrocketing while the old style papers decline.

So nice of you to assume the mantle of speaking for all of "we" others, Dio. Not arrogant in the least and oh so noble.

Linda Turley-Hansen and Tom Patterson and Michael Weinstein not right-wing whackjob enough for you? Or is the fact that they already also publish others who disagree with them just a little too much "fair" and "balanced" for you?

"We" see what "we" want to see, I guess.
