East Valley residents headed north to the high country this holiday season should keep in mind some road closures.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, in the White Mountains east of Hon Dah, state Route 261 is closed between state Route 260 and Big Lake, state Route 273 between Sunrise Park and Big Lake, and state Route 473 between state Route 260 and Hawley Lake.

The closures are done annually in the winter season and will reopen in May.

ADOT urges motorists to drive safely in snowy conditions, including driving slowly, carrying snow chains or cables, and carrying a car emergency kit with things like blankets, extra food, water, a flashlight, a small shovel, and an ice scraper.

To check weather and road conditions, visit www.az511.gov or call 511. For more tips on driving in the snow and maps, visit www.azdot.gov/knowsnow/index.asp.
