The National Weather Service has issued a dust storm warning in effect until 7 p.m. Saturday for the Valley. An excessive heat warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Monday.

The affected areas of Saturday’s dust storm are primarily the central and west portions of the greater Phoenix metro area, including Ahwatukee Foothills, Chandler and Interstate 10. Wind from 20 to 30 miles per hour, with some gusts to 40 miles per hour, will create areas of dense blowing dust that will overspread the area from south to north between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Visibility will be as low as one quarter mile or less.

Sudden reduced visibility on roadways can create dangerous driving conditions, making multi-car pileups more likely, according to the weather service. If you encounter blowing dust or sand on the roadway, pull off as far as possible and put your vehicle in park. Then turn the lights off and keep your foot off the brake pedal.
