Former self-described “crackhead” James Harvey Heard will celebrate 11 years of sobriety Feb. 22 by headlining at Late Night Grind at Next Coffee Company, 19420 N. 59th Ave., Glendale. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.

Heard, a Newark, N.J. native, was 13 years old when he started using crack cocaine and other drugs. When  asked what he credits for his sobriety, he speaks about his relationship with his wife. He said that once he met her he “just didn’t want to get high anymore” and that he was “just tired.” His last binge was an $1,800 purchase of crack cocaine that he consumed over a period of six hours. Something finally clicked and enough was enough. He attended Narcotics Anonymous meetings for 10 years.

Heard says he knew at age 7 that he wanted to be a comedian. He shared his desire with an uncle, who “talked him out of it.” He later revisited that option after being clean for four years.
