Gov. Jan Brewer will be among the guest speakers when one of the nation’s top-ranked charter schools opens its new facility next month in Peoria.

Basis Peoria will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony between noon and 1 p.m. Aug. 4 at its new school, 25950 N. Lake Pleasant Parkway.

Others slated to speak include; Lisa Graham Keegan, former Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction; Cathy Carlat, vice mayor of Peoria; and Craig R. Barrett, former chairman of Intel Corp. and president and chairman of Basis School, Inc.

Basis operates two of the nation’s top performing schools, Basis Tucson and Basis Scottsdale.

Basis Tucson earned a No. 1 ranking in Newsweek’s list of America’s Best High Schools 10 years after its founding.

Basis Scottsdale was named the “Top Arizona School for Overall Academic Performance” by BusinessWeek magazine.

Basis Peoria will offer instruction in grades 5 through 10 beginning in August. The school expects to offer instruction in grades 5 through 12 by 2013.
