Sun City residents in a neighborhood near 99th Avenue and Beardsley Road were awakened early this morning by the presence of a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad after live hand grenades were found in the home of a man who had recently died.
Sun City Fire Capt. John Deakin said the first call came early today after an unidentified Sun City man passed away.
“We were initially called out to help because this guy had passed away in the middle of the night,” he said. “That call was canceled, but shortly after we were called again to help assist the MCSO on ordnance removal.”
Deakin said after learning of his passing, the man’s family went to the home near Lake Forest and Palo Verde drives and discovered the explosives.
“It was grenades,” Deakin said. “World War II-type stuff.”
He said the family called the sheriff’s office, which called the fire department for assistance around 3 a.m.
“His house was full of old surplus ordnance,” Deakin said. “So the bomb squad sent in their little robot to make sure nothing was going to blow up. And nothing did.”
The ordnance was cleared, and the police and fire crews were gone by 6 a.m.
Deakin said he and his crew have assisted on some strange calls in the past, though none quite like this morning’s.
“From our perspective, if nothing blows up it’s a successful operation,” he said. “Sometimes we definitely do find some weird stuff in people’s homes, but yes, this one was pretty odd.”
