Take a trip through time with some of the most memorable songs of “soul” musicals, both past and present.
“Dreamgirls,” “Porgy & Bess,” “Smokey Joe’s Café,” “Passing Strange,” “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” “The Lion King,” “Five Guys Named Moe” and “The Color Purple,” to name a few, are all featured in soul-stirring renditions. Some of the best powerhouse voices in the Valley will perform in “The Soul of Broadway,” which will be presented Aug. 17-26 on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Performances are at Fountain Hills Theater, 11445 N. Saguaro Blvd., Fountain Hills.
The cast features local talent Matravius Avent, Anthony Bragg Jr., Chanel Bragg, Miguel Jackson, Anne Lise Koyabe, Krystal Pope and Mitchell Vantrease as they sing their way through some of Broadway’s hit soul musicals. Highlights include the Gershwin tune “Summertime” from “Porgy & Bess;” “I Got Love” from “Purlie,” “Early in the Morning” from “Five Guys Named Moe,” the show-stopping “I’m Changing” from the hit “Dreamgirls” and “Wheels of a Dream” from “Ragtime.” Get acquainted with the some of the newer shows of the last decade, including music from “Hairspray,” “Passing Strange” and “Memphis.”
Vantrease, “Soul of Broadway” founder and Valley actor, said he’s excited to bring back the show after a sold-out run at another Valley theater.
“This show is highly entertaining and features memorable performances that audiences will truly enjoy,” said Vantrease, who last appeared at Fountain Hills Theater in last season’s sold-out hit, “A Chorus Line.”
“The Soul of Broadway” is directed by Vantrease and musically directed by Jeff Kennedy.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for ages 17 and under. Special summer discount is $5 off per ticket for advance reservations made through the box office only — no will-call discounts.
