United Blood Services has revved up its efforts to increase blood supplies this summer by enticing donors with the possibility of winning a new car.

Since June, United Blood Services has had a contest where blood donors can enter to win a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, courtesy of Valley Volkswagen dealerships.

Sue Thew, a spokeswoman for United Blood Services, said she doesn’t consider it an incentive but “our way of thanking people for coming out and donating during the summer.

The final West Valley blood drive before the giveaway will be from 7 a.m. to noon Aug. 25 at Banner Boswell Medical Center on the first floor in the Support Services building, 13180 N. 103rd Drive in Sun City.

“So many people are on vacation around this time, and this is a way to put extra emphasis on donations right now at this time of the year,” Thew said. “Donations drop around this time, but the blood usage at the hospitals do not.”

United Blood Services had two blood drives at Banner Del Webb Medical Center, one in July and another last week. They received 122 donations total.

Last month, Banner Boswell had 83 donations, and organizers hope to exceed that with next week’s blood drive. Eight blood donation sites are participating in the United Blood Services campaign throughout the Valley.

All blood donors at participating sites will be entered into the contest. A name then is drawn from each location, and those selected will compete in a grand prize ceremony in September.

“This is a great way to give blood to those who need it and maybe walk away with a car,” she said.
