Plans for two new downtown Scottsdale Police Department facilities at a cost of $40 million could go before the City Council as soon as October.
A 63,000-square-foot building with an evidence warehouse, crime laboratory and police communications center is planned for the southeast corner of McKellips and Miller roads, said Al Dreska, Scottsdale municipal services general manager. Also included in the $31.9 million project is a city emergency operations center.
Directly south of the operations center, a 25,000-square-foot District 1 police station is planned to replace the station beside the Scottsdale Municipal Court, 3700 N. 75th St. The project cost is estimated at $10.7 million. Both projects are to be funded by a capital improvement bond passed in 2000.
District 1 Cmdr. Dave Marshall said his station can no longer serve downtown’s needs.
"We’ve just outgrown our existing facility as far as patrol goes," Marshall said.
The council will also consider where to put its fire department administrators, who now work out of the city’s Human Resources office.
Funds already have been budgeted for the department to find and lease a 15,000-square-foot building as its central office. However, the space will have to be near downtown and have classrooms and training areas for the 255 new employees the fire department will hire in the coming months, Dreska said.
"There has been, in an unofficial manner, discussion about whether there are properties available that could be considered for purchase instead," Dreska said.
Fire Chief William McDonald has said the department might share administrative space with the police department, or would purchase an existing building and renovate it. McDonald could not be reached for comment Thursday.
"In the case of a purchase, it would have to be viewed as a lot more permanent," Dreska said.
