In an ongoing effort to combat identity theft, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office in partnership with ABC15 News (KNXV), is hosting a shred-a-thon marathon in the parking lot of the television news station's offices in east Phoenix on Monday.

The event, which will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 515 North 44th St., on the northeast corner at Van Buren Drive, allows residents to bring up to five boxes of personal documents such as cancelled checks and tax returns and have them destroyed at no cost.

According to statistics from the Federal Trade Commission, Arizona ranks second in the nation in identity theft complaints with employment-related fraud accounting for the most common type of complaint. Information from the FTC also reveals that stolen identities in Arizona are frequently used for tax or wage related fraud.
