Two Goodyear police officers have been cleared of wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a robbery suspect earlier this year.
The Maricopa County Attorney's Office Shooting Review Board concluded that officers David Bryant and Josh White shouldn't face criminal charges in the Feb. 18 shooting death of Billy Robert McGinty, 25, of Avondale.
Glendale police investigated the shooting at Goodyear's request and the county Attorney's Office based its findings on Glendale's 169-page report.
Police said McGinty stole a tip jar from a Goodyear car wash and when employees confronted him, he pointed a handgun at them and fled on foot.
McGinty was hiding at a nearby vacant house when three police officers discovered him in a backyard shed.
McGinty was ordered by police to show his hands but instead fired a 9mm semiautomatic handgun, wounding one officer. The other two officers returned fire.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and a medical examiner determined McGinty was shot eight times.
Goodyear police said the wounded officer, Ricky Melrose, was shot in the hip and chest and still is recovering.
