The Phoenix Public Transit Department is pushing for the prosecution of whoever shattered a large window in a Valley Metro bus full of passengers when an object was thrown Tuesday morning in Scottsdale.

Transit spokeswoman Marie Chapple said Tuesday her agency is working with Scottsdale police on the incident.

Several passengers had just boarded the bus at about 7:30 a.m. at a stop on McDowell Road near Granite Reef Road before it was pelted, causing $900 damage to the window, according to Chapple and a bus passenger.

The bus was traveling west on McDowell Road near Hayden Road when an object hit and shattered the window, Chapple said.

“We’re working with Scottsdale police, and we will support the prosecution of the responsible parties,” Chapple said. “We’ve had rocks thrown at buses before, but I don’t know if it’s caused damage like this.”

Chapple also said there were no injuries and that she didn’t specifically know what objects hit the bus.

Passenger Brenda Loritz of Scottsdale said she and fellow passengers saw a group of four teenagers and that one boy threw an object at the bus window.

“There were several objects that hit the bus,” Loritz said. “We didn’t know what hit the window. It sounded like a bunch of rocks thrown on the tin roof of a barn. I blinked my eyes when the object hit the window.

“An elderly woman was sitting right where the object hit — if it would’ve come through the window, it would’ve hit her right in the head,” Loritz said.

Loritz said police told her they arrested one of the boys.

Scottsdale police were unable to release details on the incident, the ages of the boys or what charges any might face, a police records clerk said Tuesday.
