Rural/Metro Fire Department hired a 29-year veteran of emergency services as the assistant chief in Fountain Hills.

Randel J. “Randy” Roberts, currently an acting battalion chief for the Phoenix Fire Department, assumes his new role on June 6. His primary responsibilities will be acting as fire marshal and fire code manager.

Roberts’ accomplishments in Phoenix include serving as a FEMA rescue team leader during the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and creating the first fire department bicycle EMS program in the nation. He began his firefighting career there in 1978, and was promoted to captain in 1985.

He has lived in Fountain Hills for 20 years.

“As I have watched the Rural/Metro Fire Department develop and grow in my community, I have always thought I would love to be a part of it,” Roberts said in a statement Tuesday.

Roberts replaces Eric Kriwer.
