A baggage handler accused of stealing passenger belongings at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has appeared in South Phoenix Justice Court.
Twenty-three-year-old Michael Hegstad is facing charges of trafficking in stolen property and burglary while working for baggage contractor Elite Line Services.
Phoenix police say they began questioning Hegstad after they saw him pull two boxes off a conveyor belt after passenger check-in on Aug. 26.
Hegstad is accused of stealing multiple items several times from the airport.
In his probable cause statement, Hegstad advised officers he had several items of stolen property in a storage locker at his residence.
Police say Hegstad later turned over to police stolen property worth an estimated $100,000.

So much for state of the art background screening. They may as well hire from the parole board.
