Volunteers in Fountain Hills and Scottsdale are working to provide warm clothing to homeless people in Phoenix.
St. Dominic’s Food Bank and KFHX (1620 AM) in Fountain Hills, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Community in Scottsdale, are calling for volunteers to sort and transport donations of new clothing and coats during two-hour shifts on Saturday and Nov. 20, said KFHX co-owner Renee Contino.
St. Dominic’s has received 40 large boxes of new, slightly irregular clothing donated by an embroidery company, Contino said.
"There will be three recipients — three Phoenix homeless shelters with shower facilities," she said. "The idea is, as people shower and clean up, they also get a new jacket for the cooler months."
The clothes will be distributed after Thanksgiving Day by volunteers from St. Patrick’s. Also, on Nov. 20 and 21, the parish will collect canned goods and clothing for the effort, said parish coordinator Dave Perry.
Contino and her husband, Dennis, founded St. Dominic’s in 1987. In 2001, the Fountain Hills couple created the nonprofit radio station to fund the food bank. KFHX has become a forum for community discussion and frequently hosts local and state officials, in addition to playing a variety of music and talk programming.
Renee Contino said the food bank has broadened its focus to helping charities in five different outreach areas — arts, education, health, seniors and children.
"While the food bank is located in Fountain Hills, it services people in a broader community than that," said Dick White, director for social justice and outreach ministries at St. Patrick’s. "We’ve referred people from St. Patrick’s out there for assistance, and helped with food drives and turkey collections to help support the work there."
