The Scottsdale City Council has narrowed its search for a city attorney to three applicants, one of whom is already temporarily filling that job.

Now vying to head the city’s legal office are Deborah Robberson, Scottsdale interim city attorney; Sarah Dickinson Grant, a former Arizona Court of Appeals judge; and Katharina Richter, a private practice attorney in Tucson.

The council will interview the applicants Saturday morning, according to a council agenda released Wednesday.

Councilman Ron McCullagh said the finalists were selected from a pool of 20 applicants during a series of closed- door meetings in recent months.

The council fired former City Attorney Joseph Bertoldo in May, after members complained the attorney’s office was slow to provide information and sometimes failed to explain the reasoning behind Scottsdale’s legal positions.

Bertoldo held the position 15 months.

Robberson joined the city’s legal staff in 2001 after running her own law firm for seven years, a city news release said. Robberson received her law degree from Arizona State University and was a law clerk for former state Supreme Court Justice Frank X. Gordon.

Richter’s firm specializes in land use planning, zoning and public law, the release stated. Before opening her firm last year, Richter served as Pima County’s chief civil deputy county attorney. Richter received her law degree from the University of Arizona.

Grant spent 17 years on the state Court of Appeals until leaving the bench in 1999, the release stated. Grant was also a Maricopa Superior Court judge from 1979 to 1982. Before that, she was chief staff attorney for the Arizona Supreme Court.

She graduated from the ASU law school and began practicing law in 1971, according to the Arizona State Bar.

No finalists returned calls for comment Wednesday.
