Uncle Sam is paying most of the costs of sending the United States Marine Band to Scottsdale, but the Desert Mountain High School Band Boosters must raise money to cover the additional expenses.
Jerry Grady, a member of the high school booster club whose son, Steven, plays percussion for the Wolves’ band, said an estimated $6,100 is needed to cover expenses to bring the 52 members of "The President’s Own" United States Marine Band to the school’s 1,200-seat auditorium Nov. 20.
"The government pays for the Marine band’s transportation, meals and lodging but we’ve got to come up with money for other expenses," Grady said.
He said added costs include hiring four additional security officers, including three Scottsdale police offers and a high school guard, buying 72 bottles of water for the musicians, purchasing Valleywide advertising in newspapers and television and printing a program.
Grady said Scottsdale police will provide a bombsweep clearance of the auditorium and stage before the two-hour performance.
He said seating is limited, and security searches and guards will be patrolling the area before, during and after the concert.
Musicians traditionally do not mingle with members of the audience.
"We’re not permitted to sell tickets or commercials, but we can accept donations from individuals and organizations," Grady said.
The Band Boosters, a group made up mostly of parents of Desert Mountain High School band members, is a nonprofit group and contributions are tax deductible, Grady said.
The band’s leader, Lt. Col. Michael J. Colburn, is an Arizona State University graduate. Many of the Marine band members have family connections with the Valley.
