PHOENIX - Immigrant rights groups filed a lawsuit in federal court in Phoenix Tuesday challenging the town of Cave Creek's new day labor law.

The lawsuit alleges the law, which prohibits people from standing on public streets to solicit employment, restricts the free speech rights of people trying to work as day laborers.

It was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund on behalf of three day laborers.

Supporters of such restrictions say day laborers pose public safety problems by impeding traffic while they seek work on public streets and sidewalks.
