Cactus Shadows High School in Cave Creek went into lockdown for about an hour on Wednesday after two car theft suspects fled into the area.

A Maricopa County sheriff’s deputy conducting a routine traffic stop just before 2 p.m. near 60th Street and the Carefree Highway learned the car was stolen, said deputy Doug Mattson.

Two others, a man and woman, fled in the direction of the school, less than one-half mile away, Mattson said. Another man in the car was taken into custody, he said. School officials said they were asked to go into lockdown because the sheriff’s office said weapons and drugs were involved.

About 2,000 district students were affected because buses could not take children from other schools home.

Mattson said the suspects, whose names were not being released, were captured by Phoenix police at about 3 p.m. near the school.
