Crews have cleared the scene of a multiple-vehicle wreck that shut down Interstate 17 Wednesday afternoon, causing serious delays in the Phoenix area.

A Department of Public Safety spokesperson said the crash near I-17 and the 7th Street exit involved several vehicles as well as a diesel truck.

Seven people were taken to the hospital. Officials said two people suffered life-threatening injuries, and the other five have minor injuries.

The diesel truck involved reportedly began leaking fuel onto the roadway, prompting officials to close down the eastbound Interstate 10 transition to the northbound I-17 ramp.

Northbound I-17 was also closed at the I-10/I-17 split interchange near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport for nearly two hours while crews removed the disabled vehicles.

ADOT tweeted out around 3:40 p.m. the road had been re-opened.

ADOT video from the area showed a massive traffic backup as drivers were routed around the accident prior to rush hour.
