Kathleen Nicola, a Fountain Hills town councilwoman, died Thursday from injuries suffered in a boating accident at Lake Powell, town officials said. She was 43.

Elected in 2002, Nicola was a real estate agent who had recently been named vice mayor. She also served Fountain Hills as town clerk for nearly 10 years before entering politics, said Councilman Mike Archambault. "She was passionate and, boy, was she dedicated," he said.

Few details have been released by the Glen Canyon National Park Service, the agency handling the accident, said Mayor Wallace J. Nichols. Emergency workers attempted to resuscitate Nicola and she died at Page Hospital, Nichols said. The council meeting scheduled for Thursday night was canceled.
