Ahwatukee CrossFit has changed my life
I love to work out. Wow! I think that's the first time in my 43 years I've ever uttered those words. What is this amazing exercise program that has finally steered me off the couch away from the Investigative Discovery Channel? Ahwatukee CrossFit. I have dabbled in regular exercise before only to eventually get bored and get horizontal again in front of the TV with a plate of nachos. However, there is something about this workout that is quite addictive.
Maybe it's the fact that I have seen results in my strength and body quicker than I have ever seen before. Maybe it's because the workout of the day is always different and never dull. Maybe it's because I always have a trainer in my small class pushing me to my limits. Frankly, it's all of the above. When I leave the gym I always feel like I have accomplished something amazing. It's a great feeling when all of us girls walk out of class feeling so strong. Perhaps a tad on the wobbly side, but always strong. We aren't a bunch of wimps after all. Who knew?
So, what do we actually do in CrossFit? We lift weights, row, do squats, pushups, sit-ups, pretty basic stuff. It's how it's all put together in a WOD (workout of the day) is where the challenge comes in. All fitness levels are encouraged, because you are first taught proper form and technique in all maneuvers. A trainer is always nearby coaching you, motivating you and monitoring your progress. You will never be asked to perform an exercise or lift more than your core is not physically able to handle.
You'll be surprised at how quickly your strength improves. Called by many "The Sport of Fitness," this program has been adopted by many police academies, military units, martial artists and professional athletes. No wimps there, that's for sure.
We women of Ahwatukee Foothills are lucky enough to have the only women's CrossFit gym, in the world, in their own backyard. It is quite simply an awesome way to burn fat and build muscle.
While I still may have a weakness for an ID Channel marathon, I feel I must quote from one of the many wonderful motivational e-mails Rebecca Parent, trainer and owner of CrossFit, sends to all of her clients on a regular basis. It sums it up so well: "There's no going back now. Something's, like, crossed over in me. Weak and mediocre just won't cut it anymore. I just couldn't live. No, the barbell can't save me...because I guess it already has."

Physix is the magic equation to getting fit, losing weight
I have found the magic equation to getting fit and losing weight ... Physix. I have struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember: Take 10 pounds off only to put 15 pounds back on. I'm sure many of you can relate.
In desperation, I have tried the "magic" diets (many of them), read books on how to "lose those pounds for good," but never found that I had any lasting results until now, when I started to work out with Shannon Sorels of Physix LLC.
Wow, I could never get my head around how important exercise is and had every excuse why I didn't have time to do it. I joined Sorels' weight management group of ladies, who are just like me. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I have so much fun working out. Don't get me wrong it is very hard work, although this girl could not do a simple sit-up at the start of the 12-week session. Now I can do many sit-ups.
The schedule goes like this: We meet two evenings a week for a workout that is ever-changing. We do everything from free weights to flipping tires to cardio. We also meet every Saturday morning and walk-jog. We are a group of women who are all fighting the battle of trying to incorporate exercise into our busy lives. We are all ages, shapes and sizes, but we all have the same goal. We encourage each other to work harder, go faster, we laugh we complain, we celebrate our victories and help each other over the humps. We are a sisterhood with the best "Team Mom" in Sorels. She has made the mystical weight loss equation simple: No magic pills, dangerous injections or starvation, she just teaches you how to eat right and strengthen your body. It is amazingly simple and the results are life changing. I have enrolled in my second 12-week program and I'm training for a half marathon. This is coming from a girl who thought she was going to die the first time she walked a mile. I'm here to tell you that you can do it too because like the bummer sticker I recently saw says: "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels."

KOSAMA 10-week body transformation ... something I happily buy in to
Who doesn't want results? I have been a longtime gym-goer, by some standards a gym rat even, but I have never been promised, nor expected, a complete transformation in 10 weeks. I sign up and show up everyday at 5 a.m. and I have not been disappointed. This is a program like nothing I have ever done. Week one begins with a fitness evaluation and the always dreaded weigh-in. Participants are put through a battery of physical challenges, from push-ups to pull-ups, I am made dreadfully clear of my lack of total body condition. But knowing that I have nowhere to go but up I attend the first real workout the next day.
The alarm rings early; 4:40 a.m. is not a time anyone should be up, let alone readying for the first day of a total body transformation, but here I go. The environment is simple and clean, no fancy mirrors, simple pull-up bars on the walls, big-screen TVs mounted around the room, three instructors and yoga mats.
The countdown clock starts and away we go, it is the first hour of the 60 that will lead to my new and improved body. Kosama is like no other exercise program I have participated in. Each of the six days a week is a different approach to whipping my body into shape: Monday, upper body, or not so fondly known as push-up day; Tuesday is Plyometrics; Wednesday, Kettlebell; Thursday, Kickboxing; Friday, lower body; and Saturday is yoga. Everything is planned to challenge my body into constantly responding. There is never a dull moment. As soon as you think you can handle the next exercise they throw in one more challenge, instead of a 30-second rest it is reduced to 15 short seconds and a few more exercises are thrown into every session.
Kosama has found the key to keeping me interested and my body challenged. I am no longer a gym rat, hanging around waiting to do one more set on the lat pull down machine. I know now that the key to getting results is constantly challenging my body, to never get comfortable and count out just one more set. I love knowing that when I am done with my hour at 6 a.m. I have asked more of my body than most people do in a day.
The trainers, the program, the other participants have a synergy that transforms a body. After just a couple of weeks I noticed a measurable difference in the way my clothes fit and my energy level. Sure, getting up before 5 a.m. is not easy, but seeing the results is a great payoff. I think adding the dreaded Kosama to my life has made a great difference.
