The Heard Museum will be one cool place during the hot summer months.
In addition to 11 exhibit galleries, the Heard is the place for make-and-take activities, sales in the award-winning Shop and cool drinks featured in the Courtyard Café and Coffee Cantina. Bring yourself, your family and summertime visitors during your summer stay-cation.
Every Sunday in July, the Heard offers free admission during Summer Sundays at the Heard. Native performers, including the Yellow House Indian Dancers featuring World Hoop Dance Youth Champion Tyrese Jensen (Navajo/Maricopa) and Estun-Bah, nominated as Best World Music Album and Best Instrumental Album at the Native American Music Awards, will give two performances.
Hands-on activities will give kids something fun to do while educating them about their native neighbors. Children’s books about the Southwest will be read aloud twice a day in the SRP Story Room. A different scavenger hunt each weekend is also fun and educational.
The Courtyard Café will offer kids’ meals, including a kids’ sundae, for a special price.
On July 4, enjoy a performance by Estun-Bah at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. free with museum admission.
On July 9, bring the family to see the new exhibit “More Than Child’s Play: American Indian Dolls.” This exhibit shows how dolls help teach native children about ceremonies and their future life roles. Dolls have also become a major artform in American Indian culture.
The Heard also will feature native performers to mark the unofficial end of summer on Labor Day. On Sept. 5 at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., experience another world champion as Brian Hammill (Ho Chunk), the 2009 World Champion Hoop Dancer, showcases his skills. Performance is free with museum admission.
The Courtyard Café and the Coffee Cantina are offering cool summer treats. The Café’s new summer menu features seasonal foods in dishes like mixed berry salad as well as crispy corn chicken tinga tacos. Mosey over to the Coffee Cantina for fruit smoothies and iced coffee drinks to cool off on a warm Phoenix day.
The Heard Museum Shop and Books & More will have sales throughout the summer, beginning July 1. Items on sale will change throughout the summer, so stop in often for bargains — or for early holiday shopping.
