For some reason I’m finding myself reading the Psalms more and more this past year. They both energize and refresh my soul. A shepherd boy named David wrote 150 of them (or at least that’s how many he got published).

Last summer I got roped into being a camp counselor for our high school youth group. I knew I was in trouble when I showed up and was the only gray-haired guy there. I held up OK the first three days but by the end of the week I felt like I had been through Army boot camp.

At one of the evening services I sat down by a ninth-grade kid named David. He reminded me of myself at that age: skinny, shy, but had a deep love for God.

As I flipped my Bible open to meditate on some Psalms I turned to him and said, “You know all these Psalms were written by a kid like you named David.” He smiled and opened his Bible to read one of them. “I’ll bet you could write a Psalm,” I said. “Why don’t you give it a try?”

My intention was for him to do it in the next couple of days but at the end of the service he handed me his Bible with the following written on the inside cover:

O Lord, my shield from which I take refuge from sin, my Rock, my Strength, Great is the Lord! He raises hope to all! Sing to the Lord for he is Almighty! Holy is the Lord, a wall against the devil’s influence. For those who are righteous worship the Lord, not so the wicked, they break as waves against the sand. Truly blessed are those who worship the Lord! I call to the Lord for it is He who is worthy of praise, my God, my stronghold, giver of salvation, this is the Lord! Mighty is He! He who knows the valleys of the sea and the foundation of the earth. He is perfect! His word is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him, for who is the Lord besides God? Light of all lights, Creator of all, keep my lamp burning. O Lord, you raised up the earth and created your people from dust. Great is the Lord; mighty is the Lord, for who is King besides he who created all? Praise the Lord! Therefore, I will praise you among these peoples, O Lord!

David, thank you, your Psalm helped me make it through the week. You are an amazing kid. I think God has big plans for you.
