In its biggest event of the year, Desert Vista High School’s orchestra will be accompanied by the symphonic band, guitar classes, and the Pointe Club for the annual holiday concert next week.

Playing to the theme “Home for the Holidays,” the orchestra’s director, Dr. Darlene Wedington-Clark, said she likes the idea of family coming home for the season.

“I have students from six or seven years ago that still come out to this concert,” Wedington-Clark said. “It’s amazing that they are still keeping music in their lives.”

Members of the band, orchestra, guitar classes and ballet dancers will all perform on Tuesday, Dec. 11, in the Joe McDonald Auditorium at Desert Vista, 16440 S. 32nd St. A silent auction to benefit the Desert Vista Orchestra Boosters will be hosted before the concert.

Playing traditional Christmas carols, modern arrangements and also Hanukkah songs, the holiday show has become one of the largest events for the school and music department.

“It’s great to see what the kids can do, and that they can have music at school and showcase it,” booster president Chris Smith said.

Interweaving the different genres and ensembles is something Wedington-Clark has been proud of with the holiday concert.

The school’s Pointe Club will serve as visuals for the performance of the classic choral song, “Messiah,” where the dancers will make their way through the aisles of the auditorium.

“It’s good for the parents to see that the Performing Arts Department works together,” Wedington-Clark added. “We’re like a family here and that’s what I like.”

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door and the show will begin promptly at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be available after the concert.
