Dan Hinds had one of those what-took-me-so-long moments.
For the first time the Desert Vista football program included freshmen in its annual trip up north the week before football camp.
The result was 144 players heading to Winslow and not much sleep for Hinds. Not because the kids were unruly, it's just the dad gene ingrained in Hinds.
"As a head coach you worry constantly just because you are responsible for other people's kids," he said. "I set a new record for a lack of sleep."
The good came from the fact that they implemented a big brother program that included assigning a senior and freshman together to get the newbie's acclimated to the system and make them feel comfortable in their first real team outing.
"It was great watching that develop throughout the week," Hinds said. "It just makes sense to do something like this to foster a good feeling for everyone involved."
