Divorce can be ugly, but with a Divorce Asset Search at least the financial part will be honest.

Randall Sorensen has been a certified public accountant for more than 30 years. Over the years he discovered the mass fraud that people do on their tax returns and developed a program to do diagnostics on tax returns.

His first product, Tax Return Score, released in 2010, could be used to create a sort of credit score based on tax returns and income. As he took notice of all the information he had access to through the IRS it occurred to him that these records could be very useful for someone going through divorce.

Sorensen is certified in financial forensics so he is approved to get IRS records in 24 to 48 hours, versus the 60 days it might take the average person to get the information, if they can even get it.

When all that information is collected Sorensen is able to compile it into an easy-to-read form that shows an asset trend analysis, asset report, sources of income and business entities, a tax return score report, and cash flow analysis.

It’s information that can be used by an attorney to make sure their client is getting all they have a right to.

“I can look at this report and in less than 15 seconds I can tell if something’s going on,” Sorensen said.

All it takes is a correct name, Social Security number and an address they’ve used with the IRS in the past three years to do an asset search. The results provide peace of mind for those going through divorce.

“If we go out there and find that what we find is what’s on the financial affidavit then somebody can go forward with assurance,” said Frances Brakebill, assistant to Sorensen. “There are no regrets. If it’s not, then it’s assurance that what’s on the table is real numbers. It’s an insurance policy. It gives an attorney an extra way of providing their client with a service. To go back and change things after you sign a decree is really hard. It’s tough. If you get it up front it’s much easier.”

Divorce Asset Search does not provide any legal counsel, but the information it finds can be useful for divorce attorneys. The search can be a stepping stone to taking further action.

“A lot of people just don’t know where to start,” Sorenson said. “A lot of times there’s a lot of secrecy about the financials. This isn’t so much about catching the other person, it’s really about honesty.”
