With increasing demand for workers in Arizona and across the nation, students at the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) are learning the skills that are transferable to a variety jobs and large employers like Salt River Project (SRP) are taking notice.
In June 2011, Isaac Usher, a high school student attending EVIT and Primavera Online, was selected for an internship as a field and shop student at the SRP Santan Generating Station in Gilbert.
Usher worked four hours in the afternoon, Monday through Thursday, alongside a journeyman power plant specialist, inspecting, repairing and overhauling all types of pumps, fans and large turbine generator equipment.
(EVIT is Arizona’s first joint technological education district. It provides occupation-specific programs for high school students at 10 school districts across the East Valley. The programs are tuition-free for high school students; classes also are open to adult students. EVIT, which has been honored as an A+ school in Arizona, is located in Mesa at 1601 W. Main St. and 6625 S. Power Road.
