It’s amazing how seven bad innings can ruin a good week.

The Desert Vista baseball program entered Friday’s game feeling pretty good after a couple of wins against East Valley programs, but some of the luster was wiped away in a 9-2 loss at home against Salpointe Catholic.

“Take this one out of it and it was a pretty good week,” Thunder coach Stan Luketich said. “I felt like we were getting better each week until today.”

Luketich was pretty solemn after he watched his team play shoddy defense (four errors) and fail to come up with the big hit time after time against the Lancers’ Jio Orozco (3-0).

The Thunder left 10 runners on through six innings, including six in scoring position, to allow the frustration mount throughout the game – not that you could tell in the dugout.

“We are a positive team and keep pushing to get better,” senior third baseman Tyler Adams, who came in relief of Conner Kelly (2-1). “We haven’t had a game like this in a long time, but we never got down on each other.”

Desert Vista (13-13, 10-6) looked to have things rolling after knocking off Brophy on Monday and then beat Chandler on Wednesday at Chase Field.

It leaves the Thunder in the low 20s in the power rankings with the top 24 advancing to the Division I state tournament next Saturday.

Desert Vista hosts Maricopa on Tuesday and then plays Westwood at HoHoKam Stadium on Wednesday to close out the regular season.

“We have a lot of work to do in practice,” Luketich said. “This is the worst game we’ve had mentally in a long time.”

Adams continued his quality season as he had two of the team's five hits and drove in a run in the sixth inning with an RBI single.
