After the Marcos De Niza band finished its rendition of the Beatles hit "Here Comes the Sun" at halftime it was Jalen Brown's time to shine.

Doing his best Willie Mays impression, Brown, a 6-foot-2, 160-pound freshman, played safety like a centerfielder catching fly balls.

"We said lineup deep, and they threw it to him," said Mountain Pointe coach Norris Vaughan.

Brown was once again instrumental in the Pride's 27-7 victory Friday night over Marcos De Niza in an East Valley Region game.

Earlier in the year, Brown led Mountain Pointe over Westwood with three interceptions. He would not top that mark Friday, however he tallied up two interceptions, giving him a total of six on the year.

His signature play of the night came with 7:44 remaining in the second quarter. Brown made a highlight reel one-handed grab on a long pass by Marcos quarterback Tommy Thornton that was intended for Jeryan Butler.

"First I was trying to deflect it, got my glove on it and tried to make a play on it. I made the play," said Brown.

Mountain Pointe defensive coordinator Jeff Decker said his young safety is playing much wiser than a freshman.

"Sometimes you want to check his birth certificate and make sure he isn't 26-years-old," Decker said. "He is a great athlete and he is still young, but he breaks great on the ball."

After the Westwood game, Vaughan said to remember that name-Jalen Brown.

Thornton probably will after he went 8 of 23 for 93 yards and thanks to Brown, the Padre signal caller had more interceptions (2) than completions (1) at one point.

Brown said there is a simple recipe to his success.

"I always worked hard, had friends and family always by my side," said Brown. "Coaches are always helping me out, working on technique."
