An elderly red light runner smashed her car into a sedan carrying a young mother and infant Wednesday morning at Elliot Road and 51st Street in Ahwatukee Foothills.
The mother, in her 20s, was taken to Tempe St. Luke's Hospital as a precautionary measure. The infant, who was strapped into a car seat in the backseat of her silver Toyota Camry, was not injured, said Phoenix Police Officer Mike Leon.
Two elderly women in a white Chevy Geo were transported to Chandler Regional Medical Center as a precautionary measure, as well, Leon said.
The accident happened around 8:30 a.m. when the driver of the Chevy ran a red light at 51st Street while traveling westbound on Elliot Road, Leon said. At that moment, the Toyota was attempting to make a legal left turn from 51st Street onto eastbound Elliot Road, he said. The two cars' front ends collided at an angle, leaving debris strewn around the intersection.
Police have not identified the victims, but said the elderly woman driving the Chevy likely will be cited for running the red light.
