Valley-based Avnet, which has locations in Phoenix and Chandler, is hosting its ninth-annual 16-Inch Softball Desert Classic on Saturday, April 21.

More than 30 area teams will converge on Tempe Sports Complex, 8425 S. Hardy Drive, in this “business-to-business” softball tournament, with proceeds benefitting Spark of Hope/JDRF, Swing Fore Kids, and the Phoenix Sports Commission Hall of Fame.

The tournament begins Saturday morning at 8:30, and events for spectators – in addition to the games themselves – will also take place, including face-painting and balloon animals for kids, hot dogs, beef sandwiches and beer donated by Crescent Crown and served by the team from Tilted Kilt, door prizes, raffles, and more.

As part of a celebrities vs. CEOs softball game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Chicago Cubs hall of famer Ron Santo and his family will take part, along with a bevy of local media celebrities and area business executives.

The event is free for spectators, and teams (men’s or co-ed) can enter for $300. Businesses interested in sponsoring the event can still take part as well. More details are available at
