A Tempe police officer and the 16-year-old boy he was chasing were hit by a car Saturday. The boy, whose name was not released, is in critical condition at Maricopa County Medical Center in Phoenix.

Officer David Koger had multiple fractures to his left leg and underwent surgery Sunday at the same hospital. Koger was chasing the boy when the boy stumbled and fell in the eastbound middle lane of Southern Avenue just east of 48th Street.

A Hyundai in that lane struck them about 10:30 p.m., police said.

Koger was sent to the boy’s home at 1024 S. Siesta Lane about 9:30 p.m. after his mother, Yolanda Chavez, called police to say she hadn’t seen her son in two days. Koger then found the boy at his workplace.
