The once-shimmering Tempe Town Lake has been turned into a nasty mud bog. City officials want folks to stay out of the lake bottom because of thick mud, debris and mosquitoes.
Vector control plans to spray standing pools of water to help rid the area of mosquitoes that may carry West Nile virus.
A rubber dam burst last week sending water down the normally dry Salt River bed.
Salt River Project and Tempe officials plan to meet over the next few days to discuss refilling the urban lake. SRP's reservoirs are close to full right now after a winter of heavy rain and snowfall and refilling the lake won't be harmful to SRP lakes.
Tempe hopes to have the lake restored by November.
