Tempe police arrested 49 people after an eight-month investigation of a fraud scheme to cash forged checks. Police announced making arrests and indictments on Wednesday, saying more arrests are possible in the ongoing investigation.

The case began when a suspect was caught in the process of committing forgery. This led to a group of suspects who were recruiting other people to cash forged checks created from a common group of accounting numbers.

More than 50 people were identified attempting to cash the forged checks at Food City, Walmart and 7-Eleven stores. Some fake checks were created with account information from paychecks, while others were created by stealing uncollected or unshredded mail.

The investigation included the check processing firm Certegy and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. Suspects face multiple fraud counts that carry two to seven years in prison.
