FLAGSTAFF — Northern Arizona authorities say a Tempe teenager has died in a sledding accident south of Flagstaff.

Coconino County Sheriff's officials didn't immediately release the name of the 17-year-old boy Tuesday.

They say the teen was injured Monday afternoon while sledding on a hill in the Mountainaire area off of Interstate 17.

He underwent surgery at Flagstaff Medical Center and was later pronounced dead.

Investigators say the teen traveled to Flagstaff on Sunday with 11 of his high school classmates and two of their parents.

They say the boy was in a plastic sled that went down the top of a hill and run into a tree at a high rate of speed.

Authorities say the victim took the brunt of the impact and suffered multiple external and internal injuries.
