3 of 4 lake dam segments to go in Thursday

Three new rubber dam sections will be lowered into place by a
crane on Thursday as Tempe works to restore the empty Town
Lake.
Crews will drop the spooled sections onto the concrete apron of
the dam during the day, though it will take two weeks per section
to install them. The 240-foot-long segments will later be unrolled
and secured in place with about 600 bolts and 150 anchor plates per
section.
The fourth and final bladder is being manufactured in Japan and
is scheduled to arrive in October.
Tempe expects to refill the lake by Nov. 1 after a July 20
rupture of one dam section caused the lake to drain in a matter of
hours. The city had planned to begin replacing the 11-year-old
sections on July 21, using a temporary dam so the 220-acre lake
could remain intact.
