More than $13,000 was raised at the 11th-annual Tempe Empty Bowls event Feb. 24-25 to benefit United Food Bank, Tempe Community Action Agency, and Escalante Community Garden.

The event featured a wide selection of hand-crafted bowls — created and donated by community potters and students from Tempe-area high schools, including Corona del Sol, Desert Vista and Marcos de Niza.

More than 115 elementary school classrooms also participated by making miniature ceramic bowls or garden gnomes for the event.

The event is a reminder of the “empty bowls” worldwide — and in Tempe in particular.
