should be 'is fighting,' since "A pair" is singular. And why is it "A pair OR"??
That should be a pair OF.

My guess is that Padilla means distinct instead of "distinctive," because her point is, "... the cooking style itself sets the restaurants apart."

requires a period to end the sentence.

This is an impossibly awkward sentence and needs to be recast: "Before each location opened, both outlets researched the availability of chicken-centric options; each also claim to have the best product in town – leaves the ASU and Tempe communities with two solid dining options."
