Tempe will honor a resident’s actions in saving several people from a January apartment fire with a special presentation during the Feb. 21 City Council meeting.

Mayor Mark Mitchell will declare Feb. 21 as “Earl Dennis III Day” by reading a proclamation during the 7:30 p.m. council meeting, in City Council Chambers, at 31 E. Fifth St., Tempe. Dennis will be at the meeting to accept the honor.

Earl Dennis III is being honored for the courage and bravery he displayed in the early morning hours of Jan. 24 when he alerted nine people in a burning apartment building on Dorsey Lane near Broadway Road of a fire.

Dennis was getting into his car to go to work when he noticed flames coming from the balcony of an apartment. Dennis alerted several residents of the apartment complex to get out of the building by yelling and banging on their doors.
