At Kona 13 Coffee and Tea, owner John Murphy says customer service is the No. 1 priority to running a successful business.

“If a customer doesn’t like the drink prepared, we will be glad to make another for them,” he said.

Kona 13 opened March 17 in Tempe next to the Wash Wizard carwash, where three coffee shops stood before. The previous three coffee shops went out of business because of the lack of business, Murphy said.

Murphy, 41, said his shop will be unlike the others, succeeding because of the hard work and dedication he has put in.

“I did many hours of research, driving around, looking at different places,” he said. “I looked at the demographics and proximity to ASU. Also, being able to produce a product that people actually enjoy is key.”

The most popular drink at Kona 13 is the “Lucky 13,” which Murphy describes as an “Irish Crème Breve,” a milk-based espresso drink that uses steamed half-and-half instead of milk.

“The people love it,” Murphy added.

Murphy, who also owns a financial planning business, says if he could do something else, he would go into real estate development.

Kona 13 Coffee and Tea is located at 1845 E. University Drive in Tempe.
