A student-teacher has been accused of having sexual conduct with a Tempe High School student.

Sgt. Michael Pooley said 26-year-old Joel Calderon, a student at Arizona State University, was arrested Tuesday at his house for allegedly having a relationship with a 16-year-old student who attends Tempe High.

Calderon had been serving as a math teacher at Tempe High School since the beginning of the school year.

During an interview with police, Calderon reportedly made statements admitting to the relationship with the student.

Police believe the sexual conduct occurred at Calderon's residence on multiple occasions and not at the school. Pooley said Calderon used social media to get to know the student.

The district tells ABC15 that they released Calderon as soon as they became aware of the alleged relationship.

ASU confirmed that Calderon is majoring in secondary education at the Mary Lou Fulton Teacher College. The University will investigate the allegations and Calderon could face expulsion if the allegations prove to be true.

Calderon faces six counts of sexual conduct with a minor, a class 2 felony. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
