Tempe has been ranked third most affordable, fun place to live by Bloomberg Businessweek.
To select the country’s most affordable places, analysts examined 6,106 ZIP codes nationwide where the median home price was within 20 percent of the state’s median. It then selected the ZIP codes with the greatest number of bars and restaurants as of July 2011.
Affordable places with active downtown areas and a cool atmosphere are vital to attracting the current generation of homebuyers, according to city officials.
“We strive to provide our residents, our workforce and our visitors with great quality of life, and really, that’s what this designation is about,” said Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman.
Scottsdale was fourth in the ranking.

Tempe's a blast if you don't get robbed, raped or murdered and your idea of a fun time is drinking in college bars or staring at the Tempe Town Lake hoping the rubber dam will explode again. Mayor Hugh Hallman forgets to mention Tempe's growing tax rate and the highest serious crime rate in the East Valley. A crime rate that's even higher than Phoenix's and significantly higher than Mesa's.
