East Valley drivers will have to find some alternate routes this weekend as crews make quieter, improved stretches of freeway.
For the second consecutive weekend, one side of Loop 101 between U.S. 60 and Loop 202 will close. Last weekend, northbound Loop 101 closed; this weekend, southbound Loop 101 will close.
Also, eastbound Loop 202 will close from Interstate 10 and the state Route 51 interchange to 24th Street. This will affect travel from downtown Phoenix to the East Valley.
Both closures begin at 9 p.m. Friday and end 5 a.m. Monday.
During the 101 closure, crews will lay down rubberized asphalt meant to lower road noise.
"We conservatively estimate that local residents enjoy a 4 to 5 decibel reduction," said Doug Nintzel, spokesman for the Arizona Department of
Alternate routes for the 101 include southbound Hayden Road/McClintock Drive, and Dobson and Price roads.
During the 202 closure, crews will replace part of a bridge.
Drivers coming from Phoenix to the East Valley should use eastbound Washington Street, McDowell Road or take I-10 to eastbound U.S. 60.
