School boards mull proposed budgets

Across the south East Valley, school districts will be approving budgets in the next few weeks.

At stake are teachers’ salaries, class size, and many other issues impacting your child’s education.

Each district is required to have a public hearing before the governing board adopts the final budget.

Highlights from each district’s proposed 2008-09 budget:

Gilbert Unified School District

Total proposed budget is $446,322,766.

Total proposed maintenance and operation (M&O) budget is $206,515,881.

Teacher salaries will increase by 2.5 percent.

Primary property taxes on a $100,000 home will increase from $17.28 to $47.13.

No cuts are being made to staff or programs.

No new schools will open in the fall.

The proposed budget was approved June 24.

The public budget hearing, followed by the formal budget adoption, will be 8 a.m. Tuesday at the district office, 140 S. Gilbert Road, Gilbert.

Higley Unified School District

Total proposed budget is $119,027,153.

Total proposed M&O budget is $48,268,518.

Teacher salary increases have not yet been decided.

Primary property taxes on a $100,000 home will increase from $28.67 to $65.06.

There are no major cuts to staff or programs, however, there has been a reorganization of educational services and human resources.

There are no new schools opening this year. A new K-8 school is scheduled to open next year and is being funded with bond money.

The proposed budget was approved June 26.

The public budget hearing, followed by the budget adoption, will be 6:30 p.m. July 14 at the district office, 2935 S. Recker Road, Gilbert.

Queen Creek Unified School District

Total proposed budget is $85,282,400.

Total proposed M&O budget is $28,255,320.

Teachers will see a 2 percent pay increase this year.

Primary property taxes on a $100,000 home will increase from $74.83 to $199.09.

No cuts are being made to staff or programs.

Newell Barney Middle School opens July 28 at 24937 S. Sossaman Road, at Sossaman and Riggs roads, in Queen Creek.

The district is also opening its first aquatic facility in August at 20255 E. Chandler Heights Road, west of Queen Creek Elementary.

The proposed budget was approved July 1.

The public budget hearing, followed by the budget adoption, will be 6 p.m. July 15 at the district office, 20740 S. Ellsworth Road, Queen Creek.
