The Apache Junction City Council will meet in closed session at 6 p.m. on both Monday and Tuesday to discuss Police Chief Glenn Walp and a temporary civilian police commander.
Recent Tribune reports revealed that civilian commander Jay Swart left his previous job with the Capitol Police Department amid allegations of dishonesty, making false statements and insubordination.
Records show that four separate investigations in 2005 found evidence to sustain charges of misconduct against Swart, who went on medical leave in August 2004.
Swart eventually took a disability retirement in 2005, claiming that a nine-year-old back injury prevented him from working as a police officer.
Six months later, he took a civilian position as Walp’s second-in-command in Apache Junction.
Swart and Walp worked together at the Capitol Police Department in Phoenix, and Swart provided a positive reference for his friend when Walp applied for the chief’s position in Apache Junction.
City Attorney Joel Stern declined to comment Friday on the closed door meetings because they will include information that is considered private.
