The City of Mesa had a groundbreaking ceremony for a major hotel located near the newly built Cubs Park.
The groundbreaking, which occurred on March 31, was the first physical step toward completing the Sheraton Hotel Mesa located along Paseo Rio Vista. A press release sent by the city states the hotel will connect Cubs Park to neighboring Riverview Park.
“The new hotel and conference center will be another great addition to the Riverview area. I can’t wait to see the positive impact it will have by this time next year,” District 1 Councilmember Dave Richins said in the release.
The four-story, 180-room hotel will include a pool, a bar, a spa, two restaurants and a 26,000 square-foot conference center on the north side of the paseo. The agreement with the project developer also includes a 20,000 square feet of adjacent retail space and will be recruiting restaurants and other retailers.
“It is amazing that just four days ago we wrapped up Spring Training in Mesa and today we are breaking ground on a new hotel. This is just the beginning of what we envision for Wrigleyville West, which will provide a great experience for Cubs fans and visitors throughout the year,” said Mayor Scott Smith.
BCY LLC – a Mesa-based hospitality group – will own and develop the hotel. The company also has an opportunity to build a second hotel – one with 150 rooms and 20,000 square feet of retail – on the south side of the paseo if it meets construction deadlines.
“We are very excited to bring this hotel to the Riverview area. Not only is it the first commercial development at Wrigleyville West, it is our company’s first hotel in Mesa,” said BCY President Bob Yost.
