ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- When Honduran-born Antonella Cecilia Packard converted to the Mormon Faith 20 years ago, she said it was like "coming home."

The Catholic-educated Packard, who grew up in "the middle of Mayan ruins," appreciated the faith's strong sense of family and conservative values. She also saw her own history in the Book of Mormon with stories of migrations, tragedies and triumphs of a people many Mormons believe are the ancestors of some present-day Latinos.

But two decades after her conversion while a college student at Mississippi State, the 43-year-old Packard finds herself on a new mission: defeating Mitt Romney and any Mormon politician who betrays what she sees as a basic Mormon principle of protecting immigrants.

As Romney continues to seek the Republican presidential nomination while rarely discussing his faith, a growing number of vocal Hispanic Mormons say they intend to use Mormon teachings as a reason to convince others not to vote for him. They have held firesides (equivalent to a tent revival) on immigration, protested outside of Romney campaign events and have traveled across state lines to help defeat other Mormon politicians with similar harsh immigration stances.

"Yes, we are happy that we have a Mormon running for president," said Packard, a Saratoga Springs, Utah, resident and member of Somos (We are) Republicans. "But a lot of us aren't supporting him because of his stance against immigrants."

While stressing the Mormon faith's historic connection to converting immigrants, Latino Mormons point directly to immigration stories in the Book of Mormon and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' recent statements against policies targeting immigrants. They also view Romney's stance against proposals giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship as hypocritical since Romney's great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, who had five wives and 30 children, sought refuge in Mexico after passage of an 1882 law that barred polygamy.

"We view immigration as a God event," said Ignacio Garcia, a history professor at Brigham Young University and a Sunday school teacher at his Mormon ward. "The book says no one comes to the Land unless they are brought by God."

Those stories in the Book of Mormon, Garcia said, give Hispanic Mormons a powerful religious argument to use, especially since most believe they are descendants of the Lamanites, an indigenous group in the Americas described in the Mormon sacred text. According to the Book of Mormon, the Lamanites lived in the present-day American Southwest, traveled south and face years of hardship, and are prophesized to eventually return to the Promised Land.

In addition, Garcia said the recent political moves by Hispanic Mormons are gaining attention because Hispanics are the fastest growing group among the LDS faith in the U.S.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not keep ethnic data on its 6 million or so members. But according to a 2011 national survey of Mormons by Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life, Latinos make up 7 percent of Mormons in the U.S.

The church says the number of Spanish-speaking units has grown from 403 in 2001 to nearly 800 last year.

Garcia said it is estimated that nearly 70 percent of Latino Mormons are illegal immigrants. He said the church has responded by hiring members whose sole jobs are to transport some Latino missionaries from state to state because they can't fly due to their immigration status.

And last year, at least two Spanish-speaking LDS branch presidents were arrested and deported, highlighting the plight of immigrants within the faith.

Packard said those high profile deportations and the influx of new Hispanic members within the church helped with the recent passage of immigration bills in Utah that included an enforcement law modeled on Arizona's but balanced by a program that allows illegal immigrants to work and pay taxes in Utah if they register with the state.

Packard said she also was motivated to travel to Phoenix to campaign against the recently defeated former Arizona Sen. Russell Pearce, who authored Arizona's much debated immigration law. She and others also have helped organized other Latino Republicans to speak out against Romney.

Pablo Felix, a Spanish-speaking bishop of the Liahona Second Ward in Mesa, Ariz., was reluctant to criticize Romney but said the immigration stories in the Book of Mormon are powerful and one of the many factors that draw Latinos to the church and act on behalf of the faith.

Felix said he cannot be sure about his congregation, but he suspects some 60 to 70 percent of the members could be here illegally.

But Hispanic Mormons may have limited influence in Arizona's upcoming GOP primary and the general election this year. Garcia said that's because most are illegal immigrants and can't vote. Those who can, he said, lean toward moderate Democratic candidates.

    Dale:

No answer here: http://eastvalleytribune.com/opinion/article_7f659b7a-4dc0-11e1-a86d-001871e3ce6c.html - Which was the ORIGINAL STORY as I recall

I'm still waiting for your answer here: http://eastvalleytribune.com/opinion/article_7f659b7a-4dc0-11e1-a86d-001871e3ce6c.html

This is where you stated "Go for it": http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/opinion/article_fa404818-5cf2-11e1-a591-001871e3ce6c.html

Your comments are nothing more than an attempt to create a strawman argument. I answered your primary question before you even asked it with my last closing statement: "I used Garcia's words, not mine. That still doesn't mean I agree completely with what he states. But it's clear that SOME MEMBERS are aware."

I guess you were too busy going off on a religious tangent that you missed what I had already written. I will not answer any of your questions above, because last time, you mentioned a "story" you wanted my input on. I gave it, but you didn't answer any questions I put there, or made any comment to acknowledge that you had even read it.

It started with this article: http://eastvalleytribune.com/opinion/article_7f659b7a-4dc0-11e1-a86d-001871e3ce6c.html Care to answer me there?

    Mr. 666,

Please get rid of the inuendo!!!!!!!!!!!! Come out with specific questions, especially where you have made only non-specific charges.

I now suppose that where you mention that illegals have been assisted, hence are known to be illegals, that assisting them is somehow illegal, immoral or otherwise improper!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was that your point, the question you wanted answered??????? Why do we Mormons love illegal aliens??????? I did answer you on that point. If fact I issued to you a challenge, one which you have ignored!!!!!!

Shall I now cut and past to draw your attention to this challenge??????

    [cut and past follows]
"One final thought. Where "Charity is the pure love of Christ," why not show some pure love towards illegal immigrants who are here, not to sell drugs nor kidnap US Citizens, but to earn a livelihood to support their families??????? Those are the immigrants we Mormons cherish!

"And know this. We fund higher education for Church Members living in Mexico, and have helped develop agriculture in Mexico, even designing and helping to pay for irrigation projects which the local government will not. You can join with us in making charitable contributions to these projects, too! Will you???????"
[end of cut and past - with some added punctuation marks]

I also asked you to join with me to stop corn subsidies, explaining how our federal subsidies of corn grown north of the border impacts corn farming south of the border and stimulates illegal immigration. Respond to this!!!!!! Do you believe that corn subsidies act to stipulate illegal immigration and hense should be stopped?????

    So Mr. 666,

It is now abundantly clear that to the very depths of your immortal soul you are waste and void of the Pure Love of Christ!!!!! You despise of not hate illegal aliens!

Now, if you have other "questions" for which you want answers, list each "one by one" with the reference you have to the piece and describe the issue or ask the question. I am having a hard time seeing through the fog you employ to screen your desires.

When I say "Go for It" understand that 1) I often do not look back farther than a day or two, 2) do not see in your babble any issues demanding responses, much less questions to be answered and 3) will answer any question which is clearly asked of me! But I do not go back looking for questions.

    So "Go for it!"

P.S. Where you see a series of punctuation marks [???????' or '??????'] assume I am asking you a question or issuing you a challenge most unambiguously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dale: This isn't the only article where you didn't answer me. I guess you forgot the one where you asked me to "Go for it". I did provide the information there.

I DID answer you, with a quote from the article. I also stated that I know my brother in law and sister don't support ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION (unlike the Catholic Church does). What's MOST INTERESTING is that you mentioned the first part of my quote, but IGNORED the second part that PRODUCED what you requested. Here it is again:

"and (this one is the specfic statement)

"Garcia said it is estimated that nearly 70 percent of Latino Mormons are illegal immigrants. He said the church has responded by hiring members whose sole jobs are to transport some Latino missionaries from state to state because they can't fly due to their immigration status." -- So, the church IS AWARE, and WORSE, ASSISTS them!!!"

I used Garcia's words, not mine. That still doesn't mean I agree completely with what he states. But it's clear that SOME MEMBERS are aware.

@ DaneMulhing: I got an email back from my sister. This is most of her answer:

"Mormons ARE Christians....I love how the very first line is incorrect...they refer to the church as "Church of Latter Day Saints". Our true name is "The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints. Hence, we believe in Christ, we believe we are in the last dispensation, and we are followers of Christ or "saints". Do you remember the "Articles of Faith I referred to when I first responded to this newspaper article???. The first one states "We believe in God the Eternal Father, and in his Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost." I truly don't know how to say it any plainer than that. The problem most "Christian" churches have with "Mormons" is that we DON'T believe that God, Christ and the Holy Ghost are all one being. We believe they are 3 separate beings, united in one goal.....that being: For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

That second paragraph.....WOW! I have NEVER heard anyone ever say, teach or think that. I suppose if we think about it, it could have been that way. Obviously the "birth" of the Savior was the same as any other birth, due to being born on the earth to an earthly mother..... How Mary was impregnated has no record. My feeling on that is: Look what we do with his (God's) name, why should I give you more info about such a sacred thing that you would just ridicule. But that's just me:) But again, never heard it taught, discussed etc.

Mormons believe we can become LIKE God. Big distinction." -- There's more, but I figure this is enough for now.

Personally, I don't care if you are Christian, Muslim, Buddist, Angnostic, Atheist, et al. I judge a person by their actions, not their religion.

    Mr. 666,

Today is Wednesday, February 29th and it's 6:48 p.m. My last post on this series of comments was on Tuesday Feb 21st at 7:12 a.m. In that posts I asked you the following:

"Just how to you conclude that we Mormons think being an illegal immigrant is AOK?"

    You replied:

' "We view immigration as a God event," said Ignacio Garcia, a history professor at Brigham Young University and a Sunday school teacher at his Mormon ward. "The book says no one comes to the Land unless they are brought by God." '

I did not bother to check back to see what you said in response. I have a very busy day on Tuesday's volunteering at a senior adult living center. I did not expect you to answer me. But you did. And apparently you demand a response. But I have not seen where you asked me any direct question, certainly not as direct as the one I asked you.

    So here is my response.

I am not a a history professor at Brigham Young University but I am a teacher in my congregation. Yet neither I nor Brother Garcia are spokes persons for the Church. But furthermore his statement does not say Mormons approve of illegal immigration. Rather it says we understand it and appreciate that it does have some beneficial side effects. Were it possible, we'd like to see all immigrants come here legally. But it's not up to us so we do the best we can.

I suggested if you do not agree about those benefical side effects you ought to stop picking up hitch hickers and stop consuming some of the produce illegal workers harvest. In your response, you denied participating in any way to realize these benefits.

So here comes another one. Our federal government's support of corn subsidies sends cheap corn south of the border lowering the price of corn grown in Mexico to the point that Mexican farmers cannot make a living growing corn there, leading many to come north illegally to find work to support their families. Will you join with me in demanding a full and complete termination of corn subsidies?

One final thought. Where "Charity is the pure love of Christ," why not show some pure love towards illegal immigrants who are here, not to sell drugs nor kidnap US Citizens, but to earn a livelihood to support their families? Those are the immigrants we Mormons cherish!

And know this. We fund higher education for Church Members living in Mexico, and have helped develop agriculture in Mexico, even designing and helping to pay for irrigation projects which the local government will not. You can join with us in making charitable contributions to these projects, too! Will you?

    ~Mormonism Not Christian

Mormonism [Church of Latter Day Saints] is not Christian is because it denies the doctrines
of Christianity. Mormonism denies that there is only one God, Jesus is God in flesh,
forgiveness of sins is by grace, Jesus rose from the dead physically.
God, One of Many Gods, is An Exalted Man, Who is Married with Many Wives
Mormonism teaches that God is a an exalted man, that he used to be a man on another
planet and he is only one of countless gods and that God is married and he brought one
of his wives to this world and produces spirit children who then inhabit human bodies at birth.
    God Had Sex with Mary
Mormons say God had sex with Mary and produced Jesus! According to Mormonism there
    was no virgin birth. "The Father came down from heaven...and begat the Savior of the World;
for He is the Only Begotten of the Father which could not have been if the Father did not
actually beget him in person...The birth of the Saviour was as natural as are the births of

@TeaPartyPatriot: I disagree. I've studied the Mormon Church. My sister, her husband, and family are active members. Although I didn't "join", I like many things they purpose. Cult is defined as:

    1. A system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object.

    2. A relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.

Under the first definition, ALL religions could be considered cults. As for the second, I've never discovered anything "sinister" in their teachings.

Hellraiser, if Mormons are Christians then so was David Karesh and all the branch davidians that Clinton had torched. Mormons are right up there with scientologists in terms of cultism. That this cult caught on is no justification to call it Christianity.

Vote for Romney if you like him. Don't vote for him if you don't.

Even Jesus was a law abiding citizen and followed the government rules. Come to America, but do it the legal way. Earn your citizenship. America is a great country!

Like Rich, Dale hates to admit he's wrong. Dale also doesn't like to apologize, even when he know he's done wrong to another.

Now answer Psychobabble Dale? They should put Psychobabble on the staff. He'd make a valuable asset to this liberal rag. The new class clown.

Accuracy.... Christians that don't recognize Mormons as Christians are ignorant and stupid. If you do any research at all you should know that they are Christians.

Concerning immigration – former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, keeps on saying that his father, George Wilcken Romney, “was born in Mexico”.

George W. Romney was born, July 8, 1907, to parents living in the Mormon colonies in the Mexico settlements located near the Sierra Madre mountains in northern Mexico. Where the Romney family, and other Mormon colonists, came to Mexico due to federal attempts to curb and prosecute “polygamy” in the United States.

Willard “Mitt” Romney is a Mormon. Strong religious faith in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) – having donated millions of dollars to the Mormon Church, and tax records show he tithes to it.

But, is Mitt Romney a Christian? Most Christians do not recognize Mormons as part of the Christian faith.

Obama is playing the Republican Party like a fiddle. This so-called war on religion is a pretext to get the far right to rally around an unelectable candidate, and Rick Santorum is playing right into it with his comments about Obama, birth control, women, gays, etc. It may play well with the far right, but will be his downfall in a general election.

If employees of Catholic institutions needing free contraception was the biggest issue facing America I'd be all for Santorum. Since the real problems are runaway deficit spendings, a lagging job market, and high gas prices I think we need to look elsewhere.

While Santorum is a proven social conservative, he is NOT a small government or fiscal conservative. He was part of the Bush spending spree. Just listen to him in his own words:

By the way, I DON'T pick up hitch-hikers, for the same reason I don't use my real name when posting. I usually have my daughter with me, and I won't expose her to that kind of risk. Besides, in certain cases, hitch-hiking is illegal.

I do my own yard work, and the entire family cleans the house. I also take care of the pool myself. Why pay money for something I can easily do myself?

As for lettuce and strawberries, since I don't know if they have been picked by hand, does it matter? LEGAL immigrants pick those crops too. However, I don't go to McDonalds because they have been raided for hiring ILLEGAL ALIENS on more than one occasion.

Dale: Did you even READ the article? And I quote:

' "We view immigration as a God event," said Ignacio Garcia, a history professor at Brigham Young University and a Sunday school teacher at his Mormon ward. "The book says no one comes to the Land unless they are brought by God." '

and (this one is the specfic statement)

"Garcia said it is estimated that nearly 70 percent of Latino Mormons are illegal immigrants. He said the church has responded by hiring members whose sole jobs are to transport some Latino missionaries from state to state because they can't fly due to their immigration status." -- So, the church IS AWARE, and WORSE, ASSISTS them!!!

My brother in law and my sister follow the Morman believe, although they ARE against ILLEGAL ALIENS. I'm interested in seeing what they have to say about this.....

Read all the comments and see the huge majority of Americans want immigration enforced. We want our laws enforced. The 12 million illegals who are here have no legitimate ID, drivers license, car insurance or legal job. Stop illegal immigration. Deport the law breakers. Stop the welfare programs that help them. Report the employers who help them.

    Mr. 666,

Just how to you conclude that we Mormons think being an illegal immigrant is AOK? Looks to me like you'd better not ever pick up a hitch hiker! And you'd best be doing all your own yard work! Don't even think about hiring someone from Merry Maids to come into your house! And as we have discussed before, you'd best stop eating lettuce and strawberries. Participating in any of these practices can be construed as supporting illegal immigrants.

    Samcat,

You're qualifing statement needs to be emphasized, so I'll repeat it. "If this is the official position." Well, it's not. The official position is a belief in strick separation between church and state, affording all people, even illegal immigrants, the right to worship when, where, and what they may" and has been so since the early 1840's.

    Slabside,

I trust that waiting 12 hours through the night did you no harm!

    "mariapar,"

there are plenty of reasons to not vote from Mitt Romney. I heard one just the other day [about 9 days ago]. He's wasting his money on a vane attempt at fame. "Vanity, vanity, all is vanity." [Soloman, I believe]

    "kj",

That same statement of principles I mentioned above also states "We believe in . . . obeying, honoring and sustaining the law." That principle so impressed the East German government that long before the Iron Curtain fell, we Mormons were permitted to commence construction of houses of worship there at a time when such construction was tied up in red tape in West Germany. We are also the only Christian denomination that has an overseas campus in Israel and have negociated to have a similar campus in Jordan.

    Now, to you all.

Think back on what was said in this article. Perhaps the most important message was "Latino Mormons point directly to immigration stories in the Book of Mormon and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' recent statements against policies targeting immigrants." These statements against targeting immigrants are a large part of what tubed Russell Pearce who largely ignored them in SB 1070.

I'm all for comprehensive immigration reform. Obey, honor and sustain the law. But when it conflicts with higher law, work to change that lower man made law. That seems to be the message being preached by Rick Sandorium, wouldn't you agree?

Separation between church and state does not mean that we don't vote. Rather it means that we vote our individual consciences informed by our faith. Think "Utah compact" here. It's a step in the direction of immigration reform. Arizona would be wise to follow suit.

Mitt appears to have forgotten some of that faith. But his father did not forget. Rather George told us the truth even when it brought him harm and rejection. Remember his statement about "being brain washed" on Vietnam by LBJ? We all were brain washed by LBJ. LBJ even brain washed himself and finally had to admit it. LBJ was the first in a line of Presidents from Texas who practiced and themselves became brain washed about foreign wars in places we had no business being.

And when we Mormons find ourselves on the "wrong side" of both history and God's law, we also change. Rather than fight our "imaginary" forces of evil, Bush 43's axis of evil, we need to get to know those forces which we do not understand. Think "Jon Huntsman, Jr." here. Did you know that ruffly 1 % of Ulan Bador, the capital city of Mongolia, a democratic republic, are practicing Mormons? We're everywhere!

What ever happened to enforcing the laws on the books? Aren't we a nation of laws? Even the bible states that one should obey GOD'S laws, then mans'. How many OTM'S(other than mexicans) are islamic terrorists waiting for their call of duty? How many more ranchers, border patrol agents, and average, law abiding citizens must die at the hands of the liberal establishment? Multi-culturalism is destroying our moral fabric and removing the glue that binds us as a nation. Press 7 for ENGLISH, all others take priority.

If this is the official position of the Mormon church, it is time to give them as much unfavorable press as possible.

"Latinos" in general don't support Romney because of his stance on ILLEGAL ALIENS. Latinos that happen to be Mormons have already been counted.

However, I found this very interesting:

"Garcia said it is estimated that nearly 70 percent of Latino Mormons are illegal immigrants. He said the church has responded by hiring members whose sole jobs are to transport some Latino missionaries from state to state because they can't fly due to their immigration status."

So the church thinks it's OK to ignore the rule of man's law?
