Organizers of the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration in Mesa have complained they’re coming up short in raising money for the traditional January parade.
But the Boeing Co. pledged weeks ago to give $10,000 to bolster the celebration committee’s slate of events and could indirectly help launch the parade.
John Goodie, parade committee chairman, hasn’t advertised the large donation when asking for additional support from the community.
“We haven’t got the response for the community like the Vets Day parade,” he said. “With the city helping the vets, you get the feeling that the Vets Day Parade is going to happen and they’re going to make it happen.”
The MLK celebration committee met this week to discuss how to spend the Boeing donation, which was intended to underwrite a breakfast for the MLK festivities so that other donations could fund the parade, said a Boeing spokeswoman.
It’s a $7,000 increase in donations from years past — which could put the parade well on the way to recover from the $14,000 it lost in city funding.
