There’s been plenty of chatter about a possible gubernatorial run for Mesa Mayor Scott Smith. Indeed, local officials often jokingly — possibly even prophetically — refer to him as “The Governor.”
At his monthly news conference Tuesday from his office at City Plaza, Smith fielded the question from a journalist in the room: “Are you going to run for governor?”
“I feel flattered that we have been able to accomplish many things in Mesa and that it’s got the attention of many around the state,” Smith said, adding that it has been a team effort.
Smith said he is more concentrated on being the mayor of Mesa and his approaching term as president of the National Conference of Mayors in June.
“I’m not going to minimize that with a gubernatorial run,” Smith said.
Smith, however, gave a vague timeline of when he might announce such a decision:
“Sometime well into this year, the first of next year, I’ll make a formal decision,” he said.
